Das katalanische Volkslied El cant dels ocells<\/em> (Der Gesang der V\u00f6gel<\/em>) steht in einer Molltonart: in der Bearbeitung f\u00fcr Viola und Violoncello solo in h-Moll, f\u00fcr Violine in fis-Moll.<\/span><\/p>\n

Der zweite Teil beginnt in der Varianttonart (H-Dur bzw. Fis-Dur), indem die Terz d zu dis (bzw. a zu ais) erh\u00f6ht wird. Offen bleibt, ob diese fl\u00fcchtige chromatische Verschiebung das harmonische Gewicht einer Zwischendominante besitzt, die zur Subdominante (e-Moll bzw. h-Moll) f\u00fchren k\u00f6nnte.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c4hnlich verh\u00e4lt es sich mit dem Ton ais (bzw. eis) im ersten Teil. Auch hier stellt sich die Frage, ob er als Terz der Durdominante fungiert oder lediglich den Ganztonschritt h\u2013a (bzw. fis\u2013e) melodisch intensiviert, da noch im selben Takt die Aufl\u00f6sung zum Ton a (bzw. e) erfolgt.<\/span><\/p>\n

Die elegische Melodie steht in auff\u00e4lligem Kontrast zum Titel des Volksliedes. Mit dem farbenreichen und lebhaften Gezwitscher der V\u00f6gel, von denen der Liedtext 32 Arten aufz\u00e4hlt, l\u00e4sst sie sich kaum assoziieren. Auch zum Inhalt des Liedes scheint die Melodie zun\u00e4chst nur bedingt zu passen: Es handelt von der Lobpreisung der Geburt Jesu und von der Freude dar\u00fcber, die die V\u00f6gel untereinander zum Ausdruck bringen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Die Bearbeitung f\u00fcr ein solistisches Streichinstrument stellt das Weihnachtslied in einen komplexen Zusammenhang von Kl\u00e4ngen. Ausgehend vom Tonraum der Molltonika h-Moll (fis-Moll), der Durtonika H-Dur (Fis-Dur) und der Paralleltonart D-Dur (A-Dur) treten Zwischen- und Obert\u00f6ne hervor, die sich zunehmend vom traditionellen tonalen Zusammenhang l\u00f6sen und eine au\u00dfertonale Klangdimension entstehen lassen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Die zus\u00e4tzlich vorangestellten Eingangsdissonanzen sowie die nach dem Volkslied angef\u00fcgten Obertonintervalle verst\u00e4rken die Mollterz d (a), die als Differenzton hervortritt, und f\u00fchren schlie\u00dflich zur Paralleltonart D-Dur (A-Dur). So wird die freudige Botschaft des Weihnachtsliedes durch ein harmonisches Gleichnis gespiegelt: die Hinwendung zur Durtonart.<\/span><\/p>\n

El cant dels ocells<\/h1>\n

The Catalan folk song El cant dels ocells<\/em> (The Song of the Birds<\/em>) is in a minor key: B minor in the arrangements for solo viola and solo cello, and F-sharp minor in the version for solo violin.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second part begins in the parallel major key (B major or F-sharp major), with the third degree D raised to D-sharp (respectively A to A-sharp). It remains an open question whether this fleeting chromatic alteration carries the harmonic weight of a secondary dominant leading towards the subdominant (E minor or B minor).<\/span><\/p>\n

A similar situation occurs with the note A-sharp (respectively E-sharp) in the first part. Here, too, the question arises whether it functions as the third of the major dominant chord or merely intensifies melodically the whole-tone descent from B to A (respectively F-sharp to E), since the note resolves to A (or E) within the same measure.<\/span><\/p>\n

The elegiac character of the melody stands in striking contrast to the title of the folk song. It hardly evokes the colourful and lively chirping of birds, even though the lyrics enumerate thirty-two species. Nor does the melody seem entirely consistent with the subject matter of the song: the praise of the birth of Jesus and the joy that the birds express and communicate among themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

The arrangement for a solo string instrument places the Christmas carol within a complex web of sonorities. Starting from the tonal space defined by the minor tonic B minor (F-sharp minor), the major tonic B major (F-sharp major), and the relative major D major (A major), intermediate pitches and overtones emerge that gradually detach themselves from the traditional tonal framework, creating an extra-tonal dimension.<\/span><\/p>\n

The introductory dissonances added before the folk song, together with the overtone intervals following it, reinforce the minor third D (A), which emerges as a difference tone. These sonorities ultimately lead towards the relative major, D major (A major), thus reflecting the joyful message of the Christmas song through a harmonic metaphor: the turning towards the major mode.<\/span><\/p>\n
